Railway Sleepers

Beach Energy, Cooper Basin SA

The Cooper Basin in central Australia, and overlying Eromanga Basin, host Australia’s largest onshore oil and gas development.

Mitchell Oliver, Petroleum Engineer at Beach Energy Limited says: ‘The reasons we prefer to utilise the plastic sleepers compared to timber are because in the desert, untreated timber sleepers are vulnerable to degradation and termites.’

‘The land-holders of the pastoral stations that we operate are organically certified. To protect their organic status, we are unable to use to treated timber of any type. The only timber sleepers that we can utilise are certain hardwoods that are naturally resistant to termites. These timbers are both very expensive and less environmentally responsible to use in large quantities.’

The railway sleepers are used to elevate supply pipes to allow airflow which reduce the extremes in temperature that effect the flow of the gasline.

Beach Energy require the railway sleepers to be pre-drilled at IR’s Mildura factory so containing posts can be inserted when the sleepers are in position. These containing posts stop the pipes from snaking.

‘Recycled plastics sleepers are a more durable, environmentally-conscious and cost-effective solution for us.’
